Precision Sheet Metal
Fabrication Services

Laser cutting and forming combined with advanced CNC post-machining. We deliver complex enclosures, brackets, and structural weldments with tolerances down to ±0.01mm.

Standard sheet metal processes lack the accuracy required for high-tech applications. 3Q Machining bridges this gap. We laser-cut and bend raw plates (0.5mm to 6.0mm), weld them into robust structures, and then utilize our 5-axis CNC mills to precisely machine the critical mounting surfaces, O-ring grooves, and threaded interfaces that sheet metal alone cannot achieve.

Integrated Sheet Metal & CNC Manufacturing

We manage the entire lifecycle of your assembly in-house. From the initial laser cut to the final CNC-milled sealing flange.

Process Step Capability & Tolerance Why It Matters for Precision
1. Laser Cutting & Stamping High-speed fiber lasers cutting Aluminum, SPCC, SECC, and Stainless Steel (0.5mm - 6.0mm). Provides a fast, low-cost blank with clean edges before bending operations occur.
2. CNC Press Braking (Bending) Multi-axis press brakes ensuring precise bend angles. Sequence control prevents material stretching. Forms the 3D structure. However, inherent material spring-back limits accuracy to ±0.2mm.
3. CNC Post-Machining (Critical) Milling faces flat after welding. Interpolating holes to true positions within ±0.01mm. Corrects welding distortion. Allows sheet metal enclosures to mate perfectly with waterproof O-rings or optical lenses.
4. Hardware Insertion & Welding Automated pressing of PEM nuts/standoffs. TIG/MIG and spot welding for structural rigidity. Provides strong, reusable threads in thin sheet metal where traditional tapping would strip out.

Engineering DFM & Tolerance Control

Fabrication Challenge Root Cause in Sheet Metal 3Q Machining Solution
Unpredictable Bend Tolerances Metal stretches when bent. If flat patterns are generated without precise Bend Allowance & K-Factor calculations, the final assembly will have gaps or interference. We calibrate K-Factors based on exact material batches. For NEMA/IP67 enclosures, we follow up with CNC Edge Milling to guarantee flat mating surfaces.
Thin-Wall Welding Distortion High heat from TIG/MIG welding causes thin aluminum or stainless panels to warp, bow, and lose structural integrity. We utilize heavy copper heat-sinks during fixturing, alternating weld sequencing, and offer Laser Welding for ultra-low heat affected zones (HAZ).
Stripped Threads in Thin Metal Tapping threads directly into 1.5mm aluminum sheet metal results in less than 2 threads engaging, leading to immediate pull-out failure. We integrate automated PEM Fastener Insertion (standoffs, nuts, and studs) directly into the sheet, providing permanent, high-strength steel threads.

Core Fabrication Materials

Selecting the right sheet alloy dictates both cost and post-processing requirements. We inventory the most common industrial grades.

Aluminum (5052 / 6061 / 3003)

Lightweight, excellent corrosion resistance, and highly machinable. Ideal for electronic enclosures that require subsequent Type II Anodizing or Powder Coating.

Stainless Steel (304 / 316L)

High strength and natural corrosion resistance. Difficult to bend but provides extreme durability. Often left "As-Machined" or finished with Electropolishing or mechanical brushing.

Cold Rolled Steel (SPCC / SECC / SGCC)

SPCC: Cheap but requires immediate painting to prevent rust.
SECC: Electro-galvanized, great for computer cases.
SGCC: Hot-dip galvanized, highly rigid but difficult to weld.

Industrial Surface Finishes

Sheet metal parts require robust coatings for environmental protection and aesthetic appeal.

Powder Coating

Creates a thick, durable layer ideal for harsh environments. Available in various textures (matte, glossy, sand).

Anodizing

Exclusively for Aluminum. Provides scratch resistance and a premium metallic colored finish.

Sandblasting

Removes tool marks and provides a uniform, non-reflective matte finish before coating.

Plating & Passivation

Zinc or Nickel plating for steel rust prevention. Passivation removes free iron from stainless steel surfaces.

Fabrication & Machining FAQ

Why do sheet metal parts need CNC post-machining?

+
Laser cutting and bending inherently have looser tolerances (typically ±0.2mm to ±0.5mm). If a sheet metal enclosure needs to house a precision optical lens or requires a perfectly flat surface for a waterproof O-ring seal, we must mount the welded assembly into a CNC mill to cut those specific features to a ±0.01mm tolerance.

What is the cost and MOQ for custom sheet metal?

+
We have No MOQ—you can start with 1 prototype. Simple brackets can cost as low as $50-$100 for a prototype. Complex assemblies requiring laser cutting, bending, PEM hardware insertion, TIG welding, and powder coating are priced based on manufacturing time. Volume orders (100 - 1,000+ pcs) drastically reduce the unit cost.

At what volume should I switch from Laser Bending to Progressive Die Stamping?

+
Laser cutting and CNC bending carry zero tooling costs, making them ideal for quantities of 1 to 5,000 parts. However, the machine cycle time is slow. Progressive Die Stamping requires a heavy upfront investment in steel molds ($3,000 to $10,000+), but it stamps parts out in seconds. Typically, the financial breakeven point occurs around 5,000 to 10,000 units, after which stamping becomes drastically cheaper.

How do you achieve IP67 / NEMA 4X waterproofing on folded enclosures?

+
Standard folded and welded sheet metal is rarely flat enough to compress an O-ring evenly, leading to leaks. To achieve IP67 or NEMA 4X ratings, we utilize our Hybrid Fabrication method: After the box is welded, we place it in a 5-axis CNC mill to machine the sealing flanges perfectly flat and cut precise retention grooves for custom silicone gaskets.
