Precision Copper CNC Machining Services
Burr-free machining of Pure Copper (C110/C101), Beryllium Copper, and Tungsten Copper. We deliver flawless busbars, heat sinks, and high-voltage contacts with guaranteed electrical conductivity.
Copper is highly sought after for its supreme thermal and electrical conductivity, but it is notoriously "gummy" to machine. Poor tooling strategies result in severe burring, chip wrapping, and surface smearing—defects that cause catastrophic failure in high-voltage EV battery packs or AI cooling systems. At 3Q Machining, we utilize razor-sharp polished carbide tooling and specialized deburring processes.

Copper Grades & Machinability Guide
Every copper alloy serves a distinct purpose. From maximum conductivity in EVs to extreme wear resistance in EDM electrodes, review our core copper material capabilities below.
| Material | Engineering Properties | Machinability | Primary Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Copper (C110 / C101 OFC) | 100% IACS. Supreme electrical/thermal conductivity. Oxygen-Free Electronic (OFC) C101 is used for critical vacuums. Very soft and gummy. | Poor (~20%) - High Burr Risk | EV battery busbars, semiconductor heat sinks, RF connectors, microwave tubes. |
| Beryllium Copper (C17200) | Combines high strength with non-sparking and non-magnetic properties. Excellent fatigue resistance. *Requires hazardous dust control during dry machining.* | Fair (~40%) | Aerospace bearings, oil & gas drilling tools, heavy-duty electrical contacts. |
| Tungsten Copper (WCu) | A pseudo-alloy combining tungsten's extreme wear resistance/low thermal expansion with copper's conductivity. | Difficult (~30%) | Sinker EDM electrodes, high-voltage arc contacts, heat spreaders. |
| Brass & Bronze | Alloys of copper with zinc or tin. Addition of lead creates free-machining properties. | Excellent (100%+) | Refer to our dedicated Brass CNC Machining Guide. |
Copper Machining Estimator
Pure copper is notoriously "gummy" and requires strict burr control and post-machining plating to prevent oxidation. Select your alloy, application, and plating requirements below to project your baseline costs.

Solving the "Gummy" Problem
Pure copper does not form neat chips; it smears and strings up. Without the right DFM strategies, threaded holes will strip and sharp edges will be destroyed by heavy burrs.
1. Polished Positive-Rake Tooling
We strictly utilize uncoated, high-polish carbide endmills with extreme positive rake angles. This "slices" the copper rather than "plowing" it, preventing Built-Up Edge (BUE) and ensuring Ra 0.4 µm mirror finishes.
2. High-Lubricity Coolant
Because copper holds onto heat, we flood the cutting zone with specialized high-lubricity cutting fluids. This evacuates the "stringy" chips immediately before they can wrap around the spindle and scratch the part.
3. Precision Burr Removal
Manual deburring on copper often damages the soft geometry. We employ automated CNC chamfering, thermal deburring, or electrochemical polishing to ensure EV busbars are 100% burr-free, preventing high-voltage arcing.
Mandatory Oxidation Protection & Plating
| Coating Type | Engineering Function & Protection | Primary Application |
|---|---|---|
| Tin Plating (Sn) | Highly cost-effective. Prevents copper from oxidizing (turning green/black) while providing excellent solderability for electrical wire bonding. | Automotive EV Busbars & Power Terminals. |
| Silver Plating (Ag) | Silver offers the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of any metal. Drastically reduces contact resistance at mating surfaces. | High-voltage connectors, Microwave & RF Waveguides. |
| Gold Plating (Au) over Nickel | Ultimate corrosion resistance. A base layer of Electroless Nickel (ENP) is required to prevent the copper from migrating through the gold over time. | Micro-semiconductor pins, Telecom pogo pins. |
