How Much Does Aluminum CNC Machining Cost?
We believe in complete transparency. Your project cost is broken down into two main variables: Raw Material Weight and CNC Machine Runtime. You can start a prototype sample for as low as $50.
1. Raw Material Costs
Subtractive manufacturing requires an entire aluminum block. Based on current market rates, our raw material pricing is highly competitive:
- • Aluminum 5052: ~$4.00 USD per kg
- • Aluminum 6061: ~$4.00 USD per kg
- • Aluminum 7075: ~$5.00 USD per kg
2. Machine Hourly Rates
Geometry and complexity dictate the equipment required. Our in-house machine rates (including operator labor) are:
- • CNC Turning (Lathe): ~$20.00 / hour
- • 3-Axis CNC Milling: $20.00 - $30.00 / hour
- • 4 & 5-Axis CNC Milling: $35.00 - $50.00+ / hour
Aluminum Grades We Stock
| Grade | Key Properties | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 6061 / 6063 | Most popular. Excellent machinability, good corrosion resistance, flawless anodizing. | General CNC parts, automotive components, decorative trims, electronic housings. |
| 7075 / 7050 | Super hard aluminum. Highest strength, comparable to steel. | Aerospace structures, high-stress aircraft mounts, mechanical tooling. |
| 5052 / 5A05 | Exceptional corrosion resistance (salt water). Highly weldable. | Marine hardware, sheet metal bending, liquid containers. |
| 2024 | High hardness (3-5% copper). High strength-to-weight ratio. | Aviation materials, fatigue-resistant mechanical parts. |

Mastering Thin-Wall Warpage Control
The biggest challenge in aluminum CNC machining isn't cutting speed—it's material deformation. When machining aerospace enclosures or skeletonized robotic links down to 0.5mm wall thickness, releasing internal material stress will cause the part to warp like a banana. Here is how 3Q Machining prevents it:
1. Stress Relief Annealing (T51/T651)
We source pre-stretched aluminum plates (like 6061-T651 or Mic-6 cast plate) where the internal stresses have already been relieved thermally or mechanically before the first chip is cut.
2. Symmetrical Roughing Strategy
Instead of finishing one side completely, our CAM engineers program the spindle to flip the part, removing material equally from both sides (Leaving 0.5mm allowance) to balance stress release.
3. Zero-Tension Workholding
Clamping a thin wall in a standard vise will crush it. We utilize custom soft-jaws, vacuum chucks, or specialized adhesive fixturing to hold the part without applying mechanical crushing force.

Post-Machining: Anodizing & Mil-Spec Finishes
| Finish Type | Engineering Purpose & Traits | Primary Industry Application |
|---|---|---|
| Type II Anodizing (Cosmetic) | Adds a thin oxide layer (0.0002" - 0.001") that absorbs dyes perfectly. Offers basic corrosion protection. | Camera Rigs (Matte Black) & Consumer Electronics. |
| MIL-A-8625 Type III (Hardcoat) | Creates a thick (0.002"+), ceramic-hard surface (60-70 Rockwell C). Requires pre-machining size compensation. | Defense & Tactical Hardware, Automotive Pistons. |
| SurTec 650 / MIL-DTL-5541F | Chromate conversion coating. Protects against corrosion while maintaining electrical conductivity. | Aerospace avionics enclosures requiring EMI/RFI shielding. |
| Bead Blasting & Tumble | Mechanical process using glass beads to remove CNC tool marks, creating a uniform, satin-matte texture. | Premium EDC Gear & Medical device handles. |
