Design specifications for CNC Machining Parts

  • Avoid inner sharp corners, all inner sharp corners need to have arc transition, it is recommended to add 1.5mm arc
  • Avoid hollowing out/undercutting structure, CNC needs tool to hollow out, if there is undercutting, need to take into account the entry and exit path of the tool, or it might considering make it with 3D printing technology without change design.
  • Recommended minimum wall thickness: 0.8 mm (metal), 1.5 mm (plastic)
  • The default machining accuracy is 0.1mm, higher accuracy needs to be communicated in advance
  • The depth of the groove does not exceed 4 times the width of the groove, and the depth of the drilled hole does not exceed 10 times the diameter of the hole
  • Avoid designing slender parts, which may vibrate during processing and cause low precision

Aluminum

Aluminum is a versatile material that can be alloyed with a variety of elements, resulting in many materials with a wide variety of properties. It is easy to process, has a great strength-to-weight ratio, is non-corrosive, non-magnetic, and has good thermal/electrical conductivity. Aluminum and its aluminum alloys are the most commonly used materials in CNC machining.

    Good mechanical properties, can be anodized, easy to cut, high cost performance

  • Disadvantage

    Sensitive to high temperatures, not as strong as stainless steel

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is known for its high tensile strength, stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance due to the addition of chromium to the steel grade. Stainless steel can be polished to a high-quality mirror-like finish, making it very popular in the medical and food industries which require good corrosion resistance and food contact grade comply.

Brass

Brass is one of the oldest metal alloys used by humans, containing copper and zinc. Known for its bright gold-look decorative properties, it has low friction and high thermal conductivity, and good corrosion resistance, making it popular in applications such as musical instruments, valves, water pipes, connecting pipes for internal and external air conditioners, and radiators.

    The mechanical strength is weak, and it is easy to turn black after a long time

Copper

That is pure copper, which is commonly used in electrical equipment because of its high electrical and thermal conductivity. It is also very malleable, highly resistant to corrosion and has antimicrobial properties, making it ideal for use in food preparation.

    Very good electrical conductivity, antibacterial and anticorrosion

Surface Treatment for CNC Machining Parts

AS-MACHINED

The original finish left on the part by CNC machining is called the “AS-MACHINED“. Fine processing lines are visible to the naked eye, but are still smooth to the touch. The surface roughness is Ra125, it can be finished to reduce the roughness, but it will increase the cost. Raw surfaces provide the best dimensional accuracy and are the first choice for parts with tight tolerances.

    Small visible knife marks, no corrosion protection

Sand-Blasting

Sandblasting is a reductive surface treatment in which a pressurized gun fires a stream of abrasive glass beads at the part to remove thin layers of the surface. This process creates a consistent matte/sand finish on the part and is often used to remove knife marks or imperfections. If your part requires tight tolerance features, then consider that blasting removes a thin layer.

Polishing

Polishing is the mechanical process of grinding with progressively finer abrasives to obtain a shiny mirror finish. The finish is highly reflective, smooth and scratch-free. Polishing is usually done on hard materials such as stainless steel and 7075 aluminum, softer metals such as 6061 aluminum may cause their surface to deform when polished. The highly smooth surface finish also makes it more resistant to corrosion.

Electrolytic polishing

Electropolishing, also known as acid polishing, is an electrochemical process used to reduce the surface roughness of a material to provide a smooth, shiny finish. The principle of operation is to pass an electric current through a workpiece submerged in an electrolyte bath. This causes the peaks on the surface to oxidize and dissolve faster than the grooves, making the surface smooth. This process is often used in conjunction with anodizing to give parts a shiny anodized finish.

Anodizing

Anodizing is an electrochemical finishing process that adds a natural oxide layer to the surface of a part. Anodized coatings protect parts from corrosion and can be dyed in a variety of colors. The coating is non-conductive, so masking can be done in areas that need to remain conductive. Aluminum and titanium are the most common anodized materials. There are two types of anodizing, sulfur anodizing (type II) and hard anodizing (type III).

    Relatively low strength, green rust may occur
