【Choose Right Material】Different Types of aluminum alloy and its applications
Aluminium alloys are widely used in many industries due to their lightweight, strength, and corrosion resistance. The properties of aluminium alloys depend on the composition of the alloy, which is made up of different elements such as silicon, magnesium, copper, zinc and manganese. Depending on the combination of these elements, different types of aluminium alloy can be produced with a range of properties. Check here to explore the different types of aluminium alloy and their applications in various industries to choose right aluminum materials.
1xxx series aluminum alloy
The 1xxx series is an aluminum alloy series with the largest aluminum content, and the purity of aluminum can reach more than 99.00%. Because it does not contain other elements, the production process is relatively simple and the price is relatively cheap. It is the most commonly used series in the industry at present. The most popular ones are 1050 and 1060.
2xxx series aluminum alloy
2000-series aluminum is a high-strength aluminum alloy commonly used in aerospace and military applications. They have excellent strength and corrosion resistance, as well as high plasticity and weldability. These aluminum alloys are generally composed of elements such as aluminum, copper, magnesium, and zinc, among which copper is the main alloying element. The strength and corrosion resistance of 2000 series aluminum are better than conventional 1000 series and 3000 series aluminum, but correspondingly, its machinability and plasticity are poor.
3xxx series aluminum alloy
3XXX series are AL-Mn series alloys, which are the most widely used anti-rust aluminum. The strength of this alloy is not high (slightly higher than industrial pure aluminum), and it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. Therefore, cold working method is used to improve its mechanical properties. : It has high plasticity in the annealed state, better plasticity in semi-cold work hardening, low plasticity in cold work hardening, good corrosion resistance, good weldability, and poor machinability. It is mainly used for low-load parts that require high plasticity and good weldability, working in liquid or gaseous media, such as gasoline or lubricating oil conduits, various liquid containers and other small-load parts made by deep drawing
4xxx series aluminum alloy
The 4xxx series aluminum alloy with high silicon content is generally between 4.5% and 6.0%. It belongs to building materials, mechanical parts, forging materials, welding materials, etc.
Its solubility is low, and it is mainly used to dissolve welding rods and hard welding rods. In addition, due to the dispersion of Si particles, the alloy will have a gray skin film after anodizing, and it is mainly used for the outer plates of buildings.
5xxx series aluminum alloy
5XXX series aluminum alloys represent 5052, 5005, 5083, 5A05 series. 5XXX series aluminum rods belong to the more commonly used alloy aluminum plate series, the main element is magnesium, and the magnesium content is between 3-5%. It can also be called aluminum-magnesium alloy. The main features are low density, high tensile strength and high elongation. Under the same area, the weight of aluminum-magnesium alloy is lower than other series. It is also widely used in conventional industries.
6xxx series aluminum alloy
The 6XXX series aluminum alloys mainly contain two elements, magnesium and silicon, which combine the advantages of the 4XXX series and 5XXX series aluminum alloys. Among them, the most widely used 6061 aluminum alloy is a cold-processed aluminum forging product, which has excellent interface characteristics and is easy to paint, high strength, good workability, strong corrosion resistance.
Typical uses of 6xxx aluminum alloys: aircraft parts, camera parts, couplers, marine accessories and hardware, electronic accessories and joints, decorative or various hardware, hinge heads, magnetic heads, brake pistons, hydraulic pistons, electrical accessories, valves and valves Component.
7xxx series aluminum alloy
The main representative of the 7XXX series is 7075, which mainly contains zinc. It belongs to aerospace alloy materials, is aluminum-magnesium-zinc-copper alloy, is a heat-treatable alloy, belongs to superhard aluminum alloy, has good wear resistance, and is often used in the manufacture of aircraft and aerospace vehicles. It requires high-stress structural parts with high strength and strong corrosion resistance, and mold manufacturing

How Much to Start Aluminum Machining Part Projects
Aluminum machining is a popular manufacturing process used to create parts and components for a wide range of industries. It requires specialized tools and expertise, making it an expensive yet essential method for many businesses. Knowing how much to budget for aluminum machining part projects can help you make the most of your resources and ensure that your project is successful. Here we will introduce the factors that affect the cost of aluminum machining part projects and provide tips on how to get started with your project.
1. raw material cost of aluminum alloy
As aluminum CNC Machining is Subtractive manufacturing technology that we calculate the raw material cost is based on a whole aluminum block, and the aluminum alloy raw material prices are: 4.00$ per kg for 5052 aluminum alloy; 4.00$ per kg for 6061 aluminum alloy; 5.00$ per kg for 7075 aluminum alloy.
2. part geometry and complexity
The aluminum parts’ geometry and complexity would determine what machining technique and equipments would be used to create the final parts, and determine how much machining time would be used to complete per product unit, which would big impact the aluminum machining protype sample set up cost and product unit cost in big volume production significantly, that’s why some of aluminum machining part could be as low as 50$ to start, but some of aluminum machining part could be as high as 1000$ to start. Overall, the geometry and complexity of an aluminum part has the greatest impact on price especially prototoype sample and small volume production.
- The typical cost rate of a 3-axis machining cnc milling machinery (including of the operator salary 10$) is 20~30$ per hour.
- The 3-axis CNC Turning is usually priced lower at 20$ per hour because its machinery cost is lower and operation is simpler.
- The average cost of 4 or 5 axis CNC Milling machining from 35$ to 50$ or higher due to its high machinery cost and complex operation.
3. surface treatment
Different surface treatment not only impact the aluminum parts’ quality and appearance, also have impact the product unit cost, the most common surface treatment is normal anodizing which is as cheap as 0.20$ per aluminum part, and hard anodizing which is 3 times of normal anodizing cost, the alodine surface treatment for an aluminum part could be 10.00$ per aluminum part due to it’s applying on aerospace aluminum parts.
4. quantities
The most cheapest set up cost for 1pcs aluminum machining part is 50.00$, but it could be as low as 1.00$ per product unit cost for big volume production of aluminum parts, so we can see the quantities has big impact for an aluminum machining project.
